Scientists have discovered the world's largest, oldest and deepest known whale graveyard in the Diamantina Fracture Zone of the Indian Ocean. The site contains around 500 whale skeletons, some dating back 5.3 million years. Researchers also identified a previously unknown extinct whale species. Located nearly seven kilometres deep, the remarkable find offers valuable insights into ancient marine ecosystems.
