India and the United States are moving closer to signing a major bilateral trade agreement, with both sides reportedly working to resolve the final outstanding issues. According to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, negotiators from both countries have already settled most aspects of the proposed deal and are now focused on addressing the remaining 1% of concerns before reaching a final agreement.
Speaking at the Citi India Conference 2026, Gor expressed confidence that the trade pact could be completed within the next few weeks. He noted that only a small hurdle remains and that both governments are actively engaged in finding a mutually acceptable solution. His comments came as senior trade officials from India and the US continue discussions in New Delhi to finalize the draft of an interim trade agreement.
The American delegation is being led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, while India’s side is headed by Additional Secretary of the Department of Commerce Darpan Jain. The ongoing three-day meeting is focused on ironing out the final details before the agreement is formally signed.
Gor’s statement aligns with recent remarks made by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who said earlier this week that nearly 99% of negotiations had already been completed. Goyal indicated that only minor issues remained unresolved and suggested that India could soon sign the first phase of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States.
Meanwhile, concerns have emerged over reports that the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering additional tariffs of around 12.5% on imports from several countries, including India and China. Addressing these concerns, Gor clarified that the proposed tariff measures are not specifically aimed at India.
With both sides signaling strong optimism and negotiations entering the final stage, the long-awaited India-US trade agreement now appears closer than ever to becoming a reality.
