A theft incident at the historic Surya Temple, located on the banks of the Katri River in the Katras coalfield area of Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, has shocked devotees and local residents. The temple, which is considered an important center of faith in the region, became the target of unidentified thieves who allegedly broke open the donation box and stole approximately ₹50,000 in cash.
According to the temple priest and members of the temple committee, the theft took place during the night. The criminals entered the temple premises, damaged the donation box, and escaped with the money collected from devotees. The incident has triggered widespread anger among worshippers, many of whom have questioned the adequacy of security arrangements at the temple.
Fortunately, CCTV cameras installed within the temple complex recorded the entire incident. Police officials are currently examining the footage in detail, and investigators believe the recordings could help identify and apprehend the suspects. The footage reportedly shows the movements of the accused, providing valuable leads for the investigation.
After learning about the incident, a former BIADA chairman visited the temple and met with the priest and temple committee members to gather information. He expressed concern over the temple’s security arrangements and urged the police to solve the case quickly. He emphasized that the Surya Temple is a symbol of faith for thousands of people and that such incidents undermine public trust and religious sentiments.
Devotees have demanded additional security measures, including the installation of more CCTV cameras, deployment of night security guards, and regular police patrols around the temple. Many residents pointed out that donations collected at the temple are used for maintenance and charitable activities, making the theft a significant loss.
The Officer-in-Charge of Angarpathra Police Station stated that an investigation is underway and that efforts are being made to identify the culprits through CCTV footage. Police have assured that appropriate action will be taken once sufficient evidence is gathered.
