Google-backed researchers are seeking federal approval to release nearly 32 million Wolbachia-infected male mosquitoes across parts of California and Florida. The initiative aims to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and Zika. When these males mate with wild females, the offspring fail to survive, helping suppress mosquito populations over time. Male mosquitoes do not bite humans.
