Adverse weather conditions and lightning strikes have claimed five lives across different districts of Jharkhand over the past 24 hours. The victims include two women and a 12-year-old girl, highlighting the dangers posed by severe thunderstorms and lightning during the monsoon season.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a yellow alert for several districts, warning residents about the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. Authorities also advised people to avoid open spaces and refrain from taking shelter under large trees during storm activity. Despite these warnings, multiple tragic incidents were reported from various parts of the state.
According to reports, fatalities occurred in Ranchi, Garhwa, Dhanbad, and Bokaro districts. Garhwa recorded two deaths, while one person each lost their lives in Ranchi, Dhanbad, and Bokaro.
One of the most heartbreaking incidents took place in Kulli village under the Itki police station area of Ranchi district. A 12-year-old girl was reportedly collecting mangoes from a tree along with her parents when a lightning strike hit the area during a thunderstorm. The child died on the spot, while her parents sustained injuries in the incident.
In another case, a 45-year-old woman from Garakhurd village in Garhwa district’s Kandi police station area lost her life after being struck by lightning. Local authorities and police officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incidents and gathering details about the other victims.
The recent fatalities serve as a reminder of the risks associated with severe weather conditions. Officials have urged residents to follow weather advisories carefully, avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms, and seek safe shelter whenever lightning activity is reported. With rainfall expected to continue in several parts of Jharkhand, authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance to prevent further loss of life.
