India will conduct its first-ever digital census in 2026, marking a major transformation in the country’s data collection process. This shift to a fully digital system is expected to make the exercise more efficient, transparent, and accurate.Participation in the census will be legally mandatory. Authorities have stated that providing false information or refusing to share required details may lead to legal consequences. Under the rules, individuals found guilty could face up to three years in prison or a financial penalty. The census will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, data related to housing will be collected, including details about the condition of homes, available amenities, and other basic infrastructure information. In the second phase, personal and demographic details of individuals will be gathered. For every 1,000 residents, one government enumerator will be assigned. The enumerator will use a dedicated mobile application to record and upload data directly to the digital system. This new approach aims to improve accuracy, reduce paperwork, and ensure faster processing and publication of census results.
