At least six people, including four members of the same family, were killed after a herd of wild elephants went on a rampage in Gondwar village of Churchu block in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district late at night. The incident occurred between 1 am and 2 am when a group of five elephants entered the village in search of food and attacked a house where the family was sleeping.
According to forest officials, the elephants had been moving along the Bokaro–Ramgarh border and reached the village near Ango late at night. When residents tried to flee after spotting the animals, the elephants trampled four family members inside the house and two others nearby. All six died on the spot.
Senior district and forest officials rushed to the site and began relief measures. The administration assured compensation to the victims’ families as per norms. Forest authorities said warning announcements had been made earlier and appealed to villagers to remain cautious and avoid forest areas, as the herd is still highly aggressive.
