A tabletop runway is a specialized airport runway built on the top of a plateau or elevated terrain, with one or both ends adjoining steep slopes or drop-offs. In the recent crash involving a chartered aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar near Baramati, attention has turned to the risks associated with tabletop runways. Aviation experts note that these runways demand high pilot precision, strict adherence to approach procedures, and favorable weather conditions. Any deviation, such as poor visibility, sudden wind changes, or delayed decision-making during a go-around, can increase risk.

India has several tabletop runways, including those in Mangaluru and Kozhikode, where past incidents have highlighted similar challenges. Investigators typically examine runway design, visibility, pilot response, and air traffic control communication to determine contributing factors in such accidents.
