Bihar has approved its first-ever nuclear power plant, marking a major step toward strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure and reducing dependence on conventional power sources. The proposed 1,400 MW project will be developed in Banka district and is expected to play a key role in meeting Bihar’s growing electricity demand.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has been assigned responsibility for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which is expected to be completed within five months. Officials said the foundation stone for the ambitious project could be laid by November if preparations move as planned.
In its initial phase, the plant is proposed to include two 700 MW nuclear units, with future expansion possible depending on energy requirements. Authorities believe the project will provide stable, clean electricity, support industrial development, and improve energy security in Bihar, which currently relies heavily on coal-based and imported power for its growing economic needs.
